Gone are the days when a holiday in Rio de Janeiro meant a bargain break in the sun. An increasingly strong national currency and increased tourism means that visitors can get an unpleasant surprise when they clock restaurant prices in the city. But cash-strapped travellers needn't panic - while the touristy Zona Sul (South Zone) of the city is home to any number of super-pricey restaurants, it's perfectly possible to eat well without breaking the bank. Head away from the beaches and you'll find a wealth of good value spots, many of which operate buffet-style, with your plate of food priced by weight. Those with serious hunger pangs should look for places offering 'rodizio' food, where you can eat all you want for a set price. Pizza and barbequed meat are the most common foods to be served rodizio-style, but there's usually an abundance of innovative vegetable dishes on offer too.
