With international museum and foundation partners and a worldwide reach, the San Francisco based Museum of the African Diaspora sees itself as the headquarters of a global museum, at once celebrating and commemorating the triumphs and tragedies of the African diaspora. The museum space, in San Francisco's burgeoning SoMA arts district, features collections and exhibitions of slave histories, African-American art, African music, and African culinary traditions, to name just a few. All in all, the MoAD provides a revelatory and invaluable cultural experience. Open Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 6 pm. The attached Heritage Center, which focuses on education about the African diaspora, is open 12-4pm.
