You will know when you have arrived at Hotel Mirador Maya when you see a gigantic palapa-style thatch roof rising above the flat countryside on the south side of Highway 186 at the eastern entrance to Xpujil. Behind this restaurant are ten simple wooden cabins, each with its own fenced-in covered front porch. The accommodations face each other across a scruffy lawn dotted with small palm trees. Ask to look at the rooms that are available before accepting one – some have been renovated and others not.Between the similarly priced Hotel Calakmul and Hotel Mirador Maya, the Calakmul is the better choice – stay there and come to the Mirador, which has the better restaurant. Bus tour groups frequent it, which ensures that the food, although nothing fancy, is consistently good. While staying here, visit the Mayan ruins of Xpujil, Becan, Chicanna, and Calakmul.
