Permission to visit Chakanbakan must first be requested from the office of INAH in Chetumal, the capital of the state of Quintana Roo. Local tour guides can arrange this ahead of time.On the Map: El Palmar Archeological Zone is located at east of Xpujil at Latitude 18.45 N, Longitude 89 W near the town of Caobas, Municipality of Othón P. Blanco, Quintana Roo, 90 miles west of Chetumal.
How To Get There: On Highway 186 near the border of Campeche and Quintana Roo, turn south on the road to Caobas. The site is located one km from the town. From the gate it is a 1 km walk to the site. In Coabas, ask for Don Pascual, the caretaker, or look for him at the site.
Need to Know: Roads are poorly marked so ask for directions frequently.
Hours of Operation: Open by permission daily, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Give Don Pascual, the caretaker, 100 pesos.
