El Palmar is a site you can visit easily on your own because the town of Kiche Las Pailas can be found on most maps of Campeche and permission is not required to visit the site.On the Map: El Palmar Archeological Zone is located at Latitude 18.25° N, Longitude 90.7667° W near the town of Kiche Las Pailas, Campeche in the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve. Calakmul Archeological Zone is 50 km west and Rio Bec Archeological Zone is 33 km north
How To Get There: From Xpujil to Castillo Brito (23 km) to Cristobal Colon (11 km) to Once de Mayo (8 km) to Ninos Heroes (5 km) to El Carmen (5 km) to Unidad y Trabajo (5 km) to Ley de Fomento Agrario (4 km) to Kiche las Pailas (9 km). Ask in town for for Don Dionisio, the ejido comisario, or his daughter Celia to take you to the site and guide you around it.
Need to Know: Roads are poorly marked so ask for directions frequently.
Hours of Operation: Open to the public daily, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. No prior permission needed. Give the Don Dionisio or Celia 100 pesos. They will get in your car, take you to the site, and guide you around the ruins.
