Tulsa Travel Guide

Where the Great Plains and the Ozark Plateau meet lies the "Oil Capital of the World." Yes, Tulsa, Oklahoma traces its rich history to the oil boom in the 1920s -- but the town wasn't foolish enough to depend on an exhaustible resource. The Tulsa of the present is a cosmopolitan hub of business and pleasure, work and fun. But one thing hasn't changed through the years: whether you're watching a concert at the ultra-modern BOK Center or biking in the Rivertrail, you will still feel that distinct Southern charm and hospitality that makes Tulsa such a great place to explore and experience.

Sights

Start your tour of Tulsa at the Gilcrease Museum where you will get a large dose of American art amidst lush gardens. Head to the Ida Dennie Willis Museum of Miniatures, Dolls and Toys with its over 2,000 collections or visit the locally built Gyrocopter at the Tulsa Air and Space Museum. Green thumbs shouldn't miss the gardening demonstrations at the Tulsa Garden Center while sports enthusiasts can get their fill at the All Star Sports Complex. The whole family will surely love the Tulsa Zoo with its more than 1,500 animals, including rare and endangered species. Located just behind the zoo is the Oxley Nature Center, where you can go bird-watching. If you're looking to beat the heat, check out Big Splash Water Park  with its seven-storey tall water slides.

Dining

For a true taste of Tulsa, visit the restaurants and eateries that line Cherry Street and 15th Street South in the Downtown area. Another popular dining destination is 71st Street South in the Brookside District near Midtown. Mouthwatering BBQ and steaks can be had in both these locations. Cherry Street is also known for some of the region's best pizza. Indian, Japanese, Italian, Mexican and American food are all abundant in the Greenwood district. The Utica Square also has great restaurants. Late night drinks can be found at the Blue Dome district.

Shopping

There is no shortage of shopping areas in Tulsa. Utica Square, with its well-landscaped gardens is an old favorite. Eastland Mall and Southroads are also other popular areas. Upscale shoppers can head to The Plaza while those seeking to experience mall shopping in a rural setting can visit The Farm Shopping Center. The biggest shopping center in the region, Woodland Hills Mall, also has great selections with its more than 150 specialty stores and four department stores.
