Tianjin's history as a voluntary and forced host of foreign armies and diplomats from across Europe and Asia have also helped it blossom into a city that feels very international, and yet it has retained its own unique heritage that sets it apart from any other city in China. Quite a number of the buildings, including hotels, have interesting European architecture from various 19th and 20th century periods. This was when a number of European countries, most notably Great Britain and France, set up concessions in central Tianjin. Luckily for historical buffs, many of the original structures remain.
Although much of the city's historic center has been preserved, as with most of China's metropolises things change instantaneously in Tianjin, and hotels are knocked down and shoot up overnight. There are some small boutique and historic hotels and hostels that have attempted to keep their individuality and charm. Most hotels, though, are the ubiquitous many-storied shiny new business hotels that have sprung up like weeds all over China's centers of commerce. Luckily with such a large selection to choose from, any traveler is sure to find something in their price range.
Heping is Tianjin's most central district and its busiest, and has the most unusual mix of European and modern Chinese architecture. It is situated along the Hai He river, and most hotels here are within walking distance from important historical locations. Stay here if you're planning on delving into Tianjin's rich and varied past. Just south of Heping is Hexi, a touristy area with cinemas and high-end restaurants. More European architecture and influence can be seen here, too. For a more relaxing stay, Nankai district to the west is the home of several large universities, and has a less hectic and more eclectic feel. There are also some less expensive restaurants and coffee houses in this area. Hebei, to the north, is also less hectic than downtown, but has nightlife such as a cinema and theater, a number of hotels, and lots of cultural landmarks. All feature a range of hotels in quality and price, so you're bound to find the comfort and location you desire.
