Local Expert
Jobs — By Alex Resnik on April 14, 2010 at 3:03 pmLove your city? Travel, write, tweet, and repeat with NileGuide!
We seek web-savvy, social media-loving travel writers to help us create the most kick-ass travel content on the Web. In this position you will be the grand master of your destination pages: writing awesome content; weeding out the crap; and spreading the word on said awesomeness.
Do you like to tell people what to do? Are your friends and family sick of hearing about your city’s farmer’s markets/art galleries/street food/venues? You’re perfect. We want you to be the authority on your destination. In return, you’ll build your reputation as a travel writer with NileGuide, one of the Web’s leading travel planning sites.
Working for us, you’ll:
- join a community of travel writers around the world
- learn the ropes of social media
- get great experience working with a proprietary content management system
- hack into the online travel sphere mainframe
- attract visitors to your site (you’ll make more money that way)
- tweet to a wide audience using your very own, NileGuide-branded handle
New to NileGuide? Learn more about what drives us here.
As a NileGuide Local Expert, you must:
- have stellar writing skills, and have something to say about your destination
- have the ability to quickly take on the NileGuide voice and run with it
- write according to our stringent stylistic/grammatical guidelines. Because we have standards.
- love your destination and live there (you are the “local” expert, after all)
- be tech savvy (ok, so you can write an email, but we’re looking for a little more)
- be comfortable with social media: Twitter, FaceBook, Digg, etc.
- be an entrepreneurial self-starter needing little direct management
- have a college or university degree
- preferably already be able to create blog posts in WordPress, edit photos using Picnik, and do research online
Compensation:
Local Experts receive a monthly sum of $250 for the first two months while they’re getting their destination up to speed. After two months, performance will be assessed and Local Experts will move to a traffic-based payment structure. Our hope is that Local Experts will be able to earn far more money than at current work-for-hire rates.
How to Apply:
Email your application to editor@nileproject.com and put “Application for Local Expert” in the subject of the email. Please include:
- your resume
- a cover letter explaining why you would make a fantastic local expert for your destination
- applicable writing samples (these can be in the form of links)
- a link to a Guide-to-Go you made on www.nileguide.com, which should be…
- 1-2 days
- targeted to a first-time visitor to your destination
