If you’re looking to get out and travel for cheap, but aren’t sure where to start, just consider that there are as many ways to see the world as there are creative ideas. In the case of Zachary Scheel, an Ohio native who now lives in the Pacific Northwest, one such brainchild recently helped him win a competition that brought him to Fiji as an intern to help promote a new line of Old Spice deodorant. He was pitted in a challenge against another competitor — Jonathan Ronzio, who interned on the Matterhorn in Switzerland — to see who could drum up the most traffic to the Old Spice website.
Zachary’s trip included:
Jonathan’s trip included:
- participation in a Swiss wrestling match
- snowboarding down the highest ski lift in Europe
- cable car on the Matterhorn
- $5000 spending money
While in Fiji, Zachary had to weave a hat from palm fronds and incorporate a deodorant stick into the design, then wear the hat for the rest of the trip. He also had to take a picture of the largest shark that made him sweat, while including the water-proof product in the shot.
Zachary says he prevailed in the challenge because he is “extremely competitive, self-driven, motivated, energetic and assertive,” and that his personality could best be described as “gregarious and extroverted.” While it may seem unlikely that you can actually win a contest to travel the world, like Zachary there are victors. As they say, you gotta be in it to win it.
