Feeling Groggy? You Might Have Social Jet Lag

Travel News — By Lia Del Priore on January 31, 2011 at 11:00 am

If you’ve been feeling tired but have been having trouble falling sleep, you may have social jet lag.  Social jet lag is the modern phenomenon of people’s modern lives conflicting with their nature internal rhythm.  Also referred to as a chronotype, our natural body clock tends to become confused by rigorous work schedules, watching too much TV, and yes; the holidays.  If you’re feeling tired after coming back from a long break, this may just be what you’ve been dealing with.

According to World Wide Words, those affected by social jet lag are also at an increased risk of becoming smokers.  ABC News reported that social jet lag is similar to literal jet lag, just without the travel.  Those suffering from a confused circadian rhythm can experience irregular sleeping and stress eating.  Those who are prone to this kind of imbalance are particularly challenged during the holiday season, when social obligations hit their peak.  In order to combat social jet lag, experts suggest waking up at your normal time every morning regardless of whether or not you’ve had trouble getting to sleep.  This helps to reset the internal clock, and will eventually help people return to their normal schedule.
