It’s a well known fact in the advertising world that sex sells. It’s been used to sell a wide array of products, including beer, suntan lotion, clothing, cologne, and . . . airline tickets?
You read that right. Spirit Airlines, based in Florida, is using strippers to sell its latest round trip fares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Yes, strippers. News.com.au reports that “strippermobiles” – trucks with pictures of bikini-clad women pole dancing – are being driven around LA with the slogan “I’ll go both ways for $18.” Other sexual word play is being used in the campaign as well, most notably having to do with a certain congressman in the news recently.
While it would be difficult to argue the existence of strippers in Vegas, and even more difficult to say no to a round trip ticket from LA to Vegas for $18, the taste of Spirit’s advertising campaign is questionable.
And, this isn’t the first time they have used sexual word play to sell plane tickets, most famously taking advantage of the 2009 BP Oil disaster with ads featuring oil-drenched women in bikinis and the slogan: “Check Out The Oil On Our Beaches.”
