St. Patrick’s Day in Auckland

Events, Nightlife, Things to Do — By Marie Szamborski on March 15, 2011 at 3:32 pm

Come the 17th of March you may see a few lost Irish expats ambling round looking for something, anything to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. Sadly for them, St. Patrick’s is not a very big event here in New Zealand. There will be no parades and none of the rivers will be dyed green. Having said that, the most likely places to have congregations of people sipping stout and singing the tunes of home would be, you guessed it, Irish theme pubs. There aren’t as many as there used to be as Auckland is being overtaken by trendy brewpubs and wine bars, but your best bet would be to head down to the waterfront. At the Viaduct, you find two big players Danny Doolan’s and O’ Hagan’s. They’ll both be filling glasses with the same stuff as most nights, but you are likely to find that the percentage of Irish people holding those glasses with have quadrupled. Check it out and join in the craic.
