The Birdcage on the Move

Events, Things to Do — By Marie Szamborski on April 12, 2011 at 10:13 am

An historic Auckland building, The Birdcage Hotel, is on the move again today.  A few months back, the entire building was put onto tracks and shifted 40 metres out of the way in order to work on the new tunnel which will run underground near Victoria Park. In an interesting feat of engineering the building is on its way back starting today. The action should last for a few days so there is plenty of time to go down and have a look. You can go in person or just watch for the stop motion films that will inevitably show up on the news in the coming days.

Other things to do in the area include the nearby skatepark, if you happen to have your board with you or just want to take some photos, or Victoria Park Market for a spot of shopping. It is also just a short walk, albeit an uphill one, to Ponsonby Road with its cafes and trendy shops. Have a latte daaahling! And if you get tired of it all, hop on the Link Bus to get back to town.
