When perusing brochures on New Zealand that are covered in images of volcanoes, beaches and bungy jumps, it is easy to forget that the country is largely an agricultural one. Kiwis are quite proud of this heritage and city dwellers often dream of the country life. What started as an agricultural show 168 years ago has grown into one of the biggest family events on the calendar. The Royal Easter Show now has a talent show with a first prize of $10,000, shopping and a carnival. There is also art, wine (of course this IS New Zealand) a cat show and equestrian events. Entertainment includes a Kiwi lumberjack show, local singers and bands and also a Pacific Village. In short, this is a real slice of New Zealand life and it would be a great way for visitors to these islands to find out what locals are interested in and what life is and has been like here for decades.
