What’s Hot in Bangkok? Ask a Concierge!

Food, Nightlife, Things to Do, Travel Tips — By Kevin Revolinski on April 5, 2010 at 2:33 pm

The Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit looms over the great Sukhumvit Road where one can feel the pulse of Bangkok. A superb luxury hotel with a great rooftop pool area, the Sheraton is an oasis in the city. But anyone who comes to Bangkok is going to want to get out and explore the great things the City of Angels has to offer. A good concierge knows exactly where you should start. So today I had a chat with Mr. Rattapoom “Ek” Rojanavipart, the Sheraton’s Chief Concierge.

Where do you send visitors when they want to have a drink in the neighborhood of your hotel?

To BarSu here in the hotel of course. They have a DJ playing 70s music. But also the Long Table, not far from here. It has a nice atmosphere and there is indoor and outdoor service up on the 25th floor. You can see the small lake at the Queen Sirikit Convention Center. People like the view.

Where is a good place to take a date?

Sirocco. The view is very good, sometimes you can see all the way to the Grand Palace.

Girls’ night out?

Then go to Lang Suan Road. It is not far from the hotel and there are many bars to choose from. If you don’t like one, you can go to the next. There are maybe twenty bars there. The Beach is one. They have a good selection of wines.

What about guys’ night out?

Q Bar or Bed Supper Club. Bed Supper Club has a nice atmosphere and unusual decorations. You can sit on a bed and staff will serve you food and drinks. You can even dance on your bed. The club is often full when you call for reservations, but we can usually get guests in anyway.

Where can people go for a good local vibe?

You can go to Ratchada Soi 2 or Soi 4 to see the local bars or local pubs. Or to RCA for drinks.

What are some of the best things to see on a trip to Bangkok?

Grand Palace is the highlight of Bangkok. Also the Reclining Buddha is next to the palace. Also we recommend to go to the Suan Lum night market. Or to go on a dinner cruise.

Where do you like to go out?

Whenever I recommend a guest to go to Q Bar or Bed Supperclub that means I have to inspect them. Actually I love to go to the Grand Palace. Maybe I’m too old? (laughs) I used to go to RCA.

Where’s a good place for live music?

We recommend our second floor. We have a live jazz trio in the Living Room.

Mr. Ek has been working as a concierge for the last 16 years in Bangkok at such top hotels as Banyan Tree, Plaza Athene, JW Marriott and for the last four years at Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit Hotel.
