Although the sun usually shines in Barcelona, when spring officially arrives the city completely transforms. Those who spent the ‘winter’ months hibernating with their portable heaters, emerge from their caves to fill the streets, restaurants, bars and shops. The city becomes packed with trendy Spaniards and wide eyed tourists, and there’s an electric vibe which fills the air. One of the best things about Barcelona is the huge number of bar and restaurant patios spread across town, where you can enjoy an aperitif, café con leche or a few copas de cava while relaxing amongst friends.

A few key Barcelona patios to check out this coming spring include:

1: Sol De Nit: Situated in Plaza Del Sol, in the heart of Gracia, this is one of the best places in Barcelona to take in the sun all day long. With several restaurants set up around the square you can start in one corner and ‘bar/sun hop’ until the sun goes down (at which point you can head to one of the cool wine bars on C/Verdi, right behind the plaza)

2: Can Fly: Behind the Correos (post office) in the Gotico, Can Fly has an excellent patio, with the sun brightest at  lunch time.

3: Ququ- Centred on Paseo de Gracia this tapas bar has affordable, tasty food and is a great place for lunch or afternoon tapas in the sun.

4: Cafe Del Born- At the end of Paseo del Born, this trendy cafe has an eclectic variety of coffees, teas and cakes. Its patio is just on the edge of Paseo del Born, perfect for people watching, yet not in the center of all of the action

5: Bo – In Plaza Rius Taulet, this patio gets sun almost all day and has the option of ordering smaller portions of tapas or a full on meal. Try their hamburgers!
