A Few ‘Go To’ Phrases for Getting Around Barcelona

Although it is possible to make your way through Barcelona speaking little to no espanol, a few key words and catch phrases can go a long way in ensuring that you’re getting exactly what you want. With so many difference as well as variations on food and cultural practices, it pays to familiarize yourself with a few sayings, just in case. Here are a few ‘Spanish words of wisdom’ to help you stay afloat.

1: Donde Esta…? =Where is…?- It doesn’t matter if you can’t finish the sentence all you have to do is say those two little words and follow them by pointing to your destination on a map; either that,  or use grandiose hand gestures to try and describe where you want to go. Either way, ‘Donde Esta’ will open the door to plenty of beneficial directional tips.

2: Cafe Americano =Coffee – This might seem like an obvious one, but for those coming from North America especially, one of the hardest things to figure out is how to order a coffee that doesn’t come in a shot glass. If you’re looking for something that resembles coffee back home (yet much much better), ask for a Cafe Americano. It’s essentially a shot of espresso with added hot water.

3: Invitame Algo =Buy Me Something – If you’re in the mood for being cheeky and bold, then this phrase is for you. Try it out on a potential crush one night at a bar or club and see how far it gets you.

4: Mar y Montana – Barcelona is orientated in terms of the mountains and the sea. When most people refer to direction they don’t’ say North, South, East or West, rather they say where they are in relation to the water and the mountains. So if you’re not sure where you’re going but you know it’s in the direction of the water or ‘down’ then just ask if it’s close to the Mar or in the direction of the Montana, which is up.

5: Omelet vs Tortilla – If you’re looking for an American style omelet be careful not to confuse it with the Spanish style tortilla. Both are made with eggs, but a Spanish Tortilla is a mix of eggs and potato. It’s a delicious dish, however if you’re looking for a greasy spoon cheese omelet with veggies, don’t just nod and smile when the waitress asks if you’re referring to a Tortilla, or you’ll be served an egg and potato pie.
