One of Dublin’s modern landmarks, The Spire located on O’Connell Street is one of the worlds tallest sculptures at just over meters in height. It is constructed from sections of steel which were carefully placed together by a giant crane just after the millennium. It reflects the light during the day and it is illuminated at night. The Spire is also located on the same site where a granite statue of Lord Nelson known as Nelsons Pillar stood before it was destroyed by an IRA bomb in . It is a controversial piece, with some Dubliner’s loving it and others loathing it. However, you will most likely come across it on your trip to Dublin and if you come from the airport by bus into the city you will definitely pass it by.
