Best Beaches nearby Florence

Things to Do — By katiegreenaway on July 6, 2011 at 6:33 pm

Tuscany has some of the best beaches you can visit during your visit to Florence. They are easy to get to by train or if you are renting a car, it is easy to reach by car if you leave at a certain time. Leaving really early in the morning will help you beat the traffic to the beach, if you are planning a weekend there. During the week shouldn’t be so chaotic. These beaches have the choice of paying for a chair or you can search for a free beach where you can set up camp and not pay a euro. Here are some of the beaches I recommend visiting if you find yourself in the hot, sweltering heat of Florence.

Castiglioncello beach

Castiglioncello is a hot spot for many Tuscans. Taking the train you can reach the beach in no time. The beach is rocky but it is worth the view. There are beach bars nearby to enjoy a quick bite to eat and some gelato if you are looking for something cool. The town of Castiglioncello is a quaint little town that has many cute little shops as well. Great for break from the sun and meander through the small city streets and window shop. The views from the beach are of rocky cliffs and hotels perched upon them.

San Vincenzo beach

San Vincenzo is another place where there is ample free beach. Just south of Livorno, the white, sandy beach goes far along the coast. There are many places to lay out your blanket and towels where you won’t be bothered. There are plenty of restaurants located on the beach where you can get great seafood or a quick hamburger or panino. The sea is somewhat clear with rocks and sand. There isn’t much depth but only a sandbar that goes pretty far out into the sea. What is great about going for the day, is that the locals will head in for lunch from 1pm until about 3pm and it will seem the beach is all yours. You can take the train to San Vincenzo, just like Castiglioncello, the station is close to the beach. It won’t take you long to find that perfect spot under the Tuscan sun with a nice Tuscan breeze to match.

Follonica beach

Follonica is a beachside town that is home to many tourists during the summer months. There are many hotels and camping sites you can stay at. You can reach Follonica comfortably within two and a half hours with the train from Florence. There are many paid beaches in Follonica the most you will pay would be 5 euro for a chair. To find the free beach with a car look for the sign “Il Boschetto” you’ll get to a roundabout and see a canal. Park along the canal and walk towards a bridge over that canal, stay on the unpaved side of the canal for a few feet and you will find the free beach.

As the summer heats up even more, why not think of taking a long weekend or a day trip to one of these fabulous beach side towns. You won’t be disappointed but grateful a beach is just a train ride away.
