19th of May is a national holiday in Turkey, as such celebrations were held every where in the country. It is the day on which M. Kemal Ataturk landed in Samsun to initiate the War of Republic. The day has been devoted to the young generations as a commemeration of the adversities of war and importance of the Republic and freedom.

People dancing and playing in the main square

I had an interesting time in Kanyon while meeting up with a couple of friends.. There was a mob of teens and adolescents walking and dancing while a band played extremely loud and wild music -following the mob few feet behind. No one could converse obviously, but most people seemed to be having a lot fun. Children were also celebrating the day in the main square of Kanyon, playing with balls and dancing around…

Band and the mob

Major celebrations were held in Ankara, the capital of the country, in stadiums. Young actors and actresses dressed up as soldiers and Ataturk, marched around the stadium and various sports shows were held. An interesting sight to see if you are ever in Turkey on 19th of May…
