There is a winery located in one of the highest and coldest places in the continental U.S. Freezing temperatures have been recorded every month of the year in Truckee, California, but that doesn’t stop the Truckee River Winery from producing and bottling their own fair share of award winning wine. The winery is located about 20 minutes from Lake Tahoe and just a few minutes from downtown Truckee.
It was established 21 years ago with the vision of sourcing quality grapes, bringing the fruit to Truckee in order to take advantage of the high elevation and cold temperatures, to naturally cool the fermentation and slow down the barrel aging process. It’s the highest and coldest winery and offers Pinot Gris, Zinfandel and Pinot Noir from grapes grown in Truckee and in independent vineyards in Northern California. Their bottles cost between $12-$40.
They offer free wine tasting in their new tasting room as well as bocce ball leagues, horseshoe pits, croquet and a relaxing fireplace. The tasting room is also available for special events including weddings, lunches and dinners Large parties can even use the on-site grills and barbecues for cooking, or have the winery cater the event. Just in time for the foods and colors of fall.
