Lake Tahoe is very popular in the winter (especially with this great snow) and the crowds can be a bit of a hassle. However, there are places up at the lake where you can get away from other visitors. These snow sports are off the beaten path:
Cross Country Skiing
There are some great cross country skiing places in the Tahoe area and one of the best is the summit of the Mt. Rose Highway on the North side of the lake, just past Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe. This area is called the Meadows by locals and is the go-to place for free sledding, kite boarding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. You can go back into the woods and only run into birds and tons of powder.

Try something different and jump on the back of a dog sled. There are several companies in the Tahoe area that offer full and half-day sled rides with well-trained and cute pooches.
Snow Mobile Tours
One of the best ways to see the backwoods and some great views of the lake is to go on a snowmobile tour. Because most of the area around the lake is protected, there are only certain areas where snowmobiles can go. However, if you choose one of these tour groups, you are guaranteed a great ride in a small group topped with a hot chocolate at the end.
