The Lausanne Marathon which takes place along the shores of the Alpine Lake Geneva in Switzerland is a big event in Europe as well as in the international marathon circles. There are always some star athletes who participate and Lausanne Marathon and KPMG are offering a Team Tent Village to accommodate visiting athletic groups free of charge.
But most importantly, for the local “Suisse Romande” population it is an event of great fun and festivities. The proof of its popularity is the growing number of participants who sign up each year of every conceivable level and category. From 6’351 active participants in 2008 it went up to 7’080 last year!
This year it falls on Halloween, Sunday, October 31. Even though that is not an official holiday or traditional custom in Switzerland, it had been more or less adopted a few years ago and the motif is everywhere in the shops as well as on some costumed children running around early evening with big sacks and their mothers (although they’re not really sure why). But this year, it will most likely be the adults running around in costumes and they will be the participants in the Lausanne Marathon – just to spice it up a bit.
Traffic will be blocked off around Ouchy, the port of Lausanne, and all along the Lake Geneva road. Public transportation will be rerouted to carry passengers to their destinations. The route goes up through the Lavaux vineyards (UNESCO World Heritage Site) then down past Nestle in Vevey, ending at the little village of La Tour-de Peilz. It’s also possible to do a half of a Lausanne Marathon, the 10K Mini Marathon from Lausanne to Lutry village on the Lac Leman back to Lausanne for those who want to also participate but just can’t do it all. Furthermore, there will be the Wheelchair Marathon and the Hand Cycle Marathon. In fact, walking is also encouraged for the 10K and Nordic walking is especially popular. In other words, the city of Lausanne wants everyone out to join the event.
This year in conjunction with the Lausanne marathon there will be a Marathon Expo at “La Place de la Navigation” in Ouchy. In this huge tent numerous conferences will be held regarding health, nutrition and sports on Friday night at 5:30 PM , October 29 and Saturday, at 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM October 30.
All participants in the Marathon are invited by the CGN (Compagnie Générale de Navigation) Lake Geneva’s Swiss French boat company, for a complimentary Pasta Party on Saturday night at the quai no1 in Ouchy. The volunteers for the Lausanne Marathon will be invited after the event on Sunday night for a “merci” dinner on board the ship “Le Lausanne”.
Meet you on Sunday about mid day near the Chateau d’Ouchy Hotel terrace having coffee with my pals. I’ll be the one in the Lady Gaga costume (and without running shoes! Shame, I know but it’s such a spectacle I can’t waste it by being in it).
