Lima has become a quite cosmopolitan city during the last ten years: not only there’s many new places, buildings and attractions, but also a great number of local and international events of many kinds, and one of these is the Semana del Arte 2010 (The Week of Arts 2010) that this year is presenting its sixth edition.

The Semana del Arte goes from May 10th to 16th, a week full of art of all types; exhibitions, “gallery nights,” dance performances, concerts, and some surprises.

The Semana del Arte 2010 was officially inaugurated a few days ago, on May 10th, with a tango-inspired performance at the Plaza Mayor (Main Square), called “Milonguera de Buenos Aires,” by the prestigious dancer Mora Godoy.

The main goal of the Semana del Arte is to take artists’ creativity closer to general public, so the admission to all the scheduled activities is 100% free: the events include conferences, gallery nights, live painting, and a drawing contest for children.

The most important exhibition is probably Mario Testino’s “Portraits,” at the Museo de Arte de Lima, located at the traditional Palacio de la Exposición, that is reopening this year after a long and intensive remodelation: the exhibition features some of the celebrity and fashion photo portraits that the famous Peruvian photographer has made.

Another recomendable events are the Gallery Nights, that will take place in Barranco (May 12th), Miraflores (May 13th), and San Isidro (May 14th), and the rock concert scheduled for Saturday, May 15th, at the Museo del Ejército (Army Museum) in Callao, featuring local band Fragil, acknowledged as one of the best of local scene.
