Hankering for a celebrity sighting? Hotel bars in Hollywood happen to be havens for the rich and famous so sport your paparazzi-proof sunglasses and keep your eyes peeled at these hotspots.

Bar Marmont at Chateau Marmont (8221 Sunset Blvd.)
Old Hollywood glamour meets contemporary cuisine in a legendary establishment graced by many a Kardashian and Lohan. Executive Chef Carolynne Spence cooks up a hearty menu filled with yummy dishes like oxtail bruschetta, crispy chickpeas, and beet salad. Pop in for the Sunday night fried chicken special dinner complete with biscuits, mashed potatoes, and kale.

Skybar at Mondrian (8440 Sunset Blvd.)
Breathtaking views, beautiful people, and a luxurious lounge await you at Skybar. Dress your best to get past the velvet rope and hit the dance floor while soft lighting bounces from the pool to the comfy yellow and gold accented seats. On the swanky side, be prepared to dish out $15 per cocktail.

Library Bar at Redbury (1717 Vine St.)
June 2011 heralded the much anticipated arrival of Redbury Hotel’s Library Bar owned by SBE group. Recent host of Kristin Cavallari’s Chinese Laundry soiree, this Hollywood and Vine establishment has seen its share of star-studded nights. Seen in HBO’s Entourage, and the sight of many a celebrity’s private party—ahem, Jamie Foxx—The Library is now open the public to experience a taste of old school glam tinged with today’s trends.

Looking for leprechauns, shamrocks and lassies in Los Angeles? Step dance your way into these popular Irish pubs for a pint o’ Guinness and some laughs!

Tom Bergin’s Tavern (840 S. Fairfax Ave.)
Named #1 Irish establishment in America for the fourth year in row by Tom Horan’s Top Ten Clubs in 2010, Tom Bergin’s continues to lead the lucky Irish pack in L.A. Housed in a quaint Irish-style cottage since 1949, the pub/restaurant was the inspiration for the show “Cheers” and was featured on Bravo’s Top Chef Masters. In addition to standard items like sandwiches and burgers, Irish pub grub includes fish and chips, Gaelic beef, and vodka-cured salmon with potato pancakes.

Molly Malone’s (575 S. Fairfax Ave.)
Owned and operated by the same Irish family for 32 years, Molly Malone’s boasts a spacious back room showcasing some of L.A.’s finest musicians. Initially featuring Irish troubadours, the stage now graces up and coming singer-songwriters with strong vocals like my personal favorites, Justyna Kelley and Sara Routh. Try the traditional Irish staples like the Molly Burger or corned beef sandwich, served during lunch from 11am-2pm. Pull up at a stool at the dark oak bar and transport yourself to Dublin without running into airport security.

Dillon’s Irish Pub & Grill (6263 Hollywood Blvd.)
Hollywood and Vine welcomed Dillon’s in 2009, the newest addition to the Los Angeles Irish pub scene. With over 30 beers on tap, this central Hollywood pub is a hotspot for ex-fraternity types, aided by its popular $3 pints special everyday. Striving actresses sport plaid green skirts as they bring you your drinks and your choice of comfort food. Try the avocado fries and Irish bread pudding if you’re feeling adventurous, otherwise stick to the mouthwatering mac ‘n cheese and pork chops. Get here early on game days to secure your spot at a table to cheer on your favorite team.

O’Brien’s Pub (2941 Main St.)
A Santa Monica staple, O’Brien’s serves brews, whiskies, and spirits, along with good old-fashioned Irish cuisine. Filled with local regulars and rowdy tourists, the friendly atmosphere features traditional and welcoming décor inside the Live Room which hosts Trivia, bands, and comedians, to the outdoor patio stocked with heat lamps for those cool Santa Monica nights. Happy Hour runs daily until 7pm, with discounted beers from $3.50 to $5 and fried finger foods to ease the hunger pains. Irish favorites on the menu include Bangers and Mash (sausages on mashed potatoes with gravy), Guinness Pie ( a beef and vegetable stew pastry pie), and classic fish and chips.

May these fine and fancy Irish pubs of Los Angeles bless you with a pot o’ gold or better yet, the perfect brew. Cheers!

Can’t find a designated driver to roll up to the Santa Ynez Valley for a day of wine tasting? Check out these happening wine bars in L.A. to get your fruity, oaky senses stirring without the road trip.

Lou (724 Vine St.)

Don’t let the strip mall location deter you from experiencing one of the best wine bars in Los Angeles. Clear out a Monday night and reserve your spot for a multi-course wine pairing supper for $55. Lou’s pours over thirty wines, paying special attention to those fermented with natural wild yeasts, indigenous grape varieties and minimal to none dependence on fancy technologies and synthetics.

A.O.C. (8022 West 3rd St.)

In 2010, Angeleno Magazine named A.O.C. Wine Bar to “10 for All Time” list. Celebrity Chef Suzanne Goin and Sommelier Caroline Styne merge to form the perfect blend of Mediterranean delights and vino specialties. Serving over 50 wines by the glass, surrender your indecisive self to the knowledgeable waiter. Don’t miss “Flights and Bites” on Monday nights, where A.O.C. takes you on a trip to a different wine region in the world.

Barbrix (2442 Hyperion Ave.)

Los Angeles Magazine voted Barbrix the “Best Wine Bar” in August 2011, and who are we to argue with authority. Set up in a converted 1940’s house, its casual but quaint interior with hardwood floors and a social square bar makes diners feel at home. Claudio Blotta’s extensive, yet affordable wine list steals the show. Chef Don Dickman offers popular cooking classes for those interested in whipping up their own Mediterranean small plates.

Craving something sweet? Have no fear, Los Angeles may have a penchant for leggy models and skinny actors but the local’s love for decadent desserts is what keeps our pilates, yoga, and dance studios in business.

Sweet Lady Jane Bakery (West Hollywood & Santa Monica)

Jane Lockhart began baking out of her house, initially selling desserts to local restaurants. She opened her first bakery in 1988 to rave reviews and constant praise of her heavenly pastries and artful desserts. Freshly made cakes and cheesecakes celebrate special occasions, while the unique selection of cookies and cupcakes are perfect for a post-dinner sugar fix. Sample the finest chocolate brownie or opt for a fruity tart to wake up your sweetest sense. Zagat Guide crowned Sweet Lady Jane the “best place in town for dessert.”

Sprinkles (9635 South Santa Monica Blvd.)

The L.A. Times calls Sprinkles the “progenitor of the haute cupcake craze.” It’s no wonder locals and tourists line up along Santa Monica Boulevard to taste this contemporary update to a much-loved American classic. Catering to all cupcake connoisseurs, check out seasonal selections like the eggnog spice or chocolate peppermint or cupcakes for special diets like the gluten free and vegan red velvets. For a truly “Only in Hollywood” success story, tune in to Season 4 of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars to watch Sprinkles Founder Candace Nelson judge some of the country’s best cupcake bakers.

Milk (7290 Beverly Blvd.)

Chosen by Daily Candy as one of the five best places for frozen treats in Los Angeles, Milk serves up freshly baked desserts and scoops out creamy ice cream treats. Featured on hit shows like The Hills and Entourage, don’t be surprised by a long line accompanying your dessert excursion. Unique spins to classic sweets take Milk to another level of the cake and cookie hemisphere. Nurse the award-winning Warm Ooey Gooey Chocolate Sundae, Black Cherry Float, or Blue Velvet Cake and transport yourself to dessert heaven.

Diddy Reise (926 Broxton Ave.)

Located right on the outskirts of UCLA’s campus, students form a line outside this legendary dessert institution that stretches no less than a block long. If you have the patience to wait for one of Diddy Reise’s signature ice cream sandwiches, you are in for a special treat. Named after the owner’s grandmother, this modern ice cream shop aims to sell top-notch quality desserts at supremely affordable prices. Cookies are made from scratch, baked fresh daily and choose from 13 flavors of Dreyer’s premium ice cream to customize your sandwich.

In a town where no one seems to have a “real” job, cafes are filled to the brim at all hours of the day with striving actors, optimistic screenwriters and industry meetings. Grab an organic bite to eat, sip on your favorite caffeinated or herbal bevvie and pull up a seat at these daytime hotspots and if you look close, you might even spot a celeb or two.

Alcove Café & Bakery (1929 Hillhurst Ave.)

Swim through a sea of hipsters to sit outside on the brick terrace, and people watch to your heart’s content while sipping on a cup o’ joe and enjoying a scrumptious brunch. A local favorite, breakfast is served on weekdays until 2:30pm and weekends until 4pm for those suffering from hangover-itis. Stop by for some farm fresh eggs with a bellini or later in the day for wraps, burgers, or heartier fare like salmon or steak. An extensive wine, beer and sangria menu pleases those thirsting for something a little stronger than coffee.

Intelligentsia Coffee (Silverlake, Venice, Pasadena)

This hip but casual coffeebar stands out amongst the Coffee Bean & Tea Leafs and Starbucks peppered throughout the city. A known favorite of A and B-list celebs, you might find yourself parked next to bonafide star enjoying their morning pick me up. Intelligentsia strives to discover and deliver the best roast coffees in the world. If you’re more of a tea person like me, check out the dizzying selections of white, oolong, black, and green teas.

Urth Caffé (West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica)

Vinny and the gang from Entourage brunched here multiple times throughout its eight seasons on HBO. It’s no wonder this trendy café is hopping at all hours during the day, serving up organic whole bean coffees, hand selected fine teas, and healthy edible items. Devour the delicious Eggs Salmone in the morning and if you’re stopping in for lunch, order the hearty Urth Pot Roast Sandwich with mixed greens on the side.

Aroma Coffee & Tea (4360 Tujunga Ave.)

Partners with the Alcove Café & Bakery mentioned above, the owners of these joints clearly know the trick to running trendy, successful cafes. A hot spot for industry hob-nobbing, this Valley gem is always packed. If you don’t find an empty meter on Tujunga, check the side neighborhood streets for plenty of free 2 hour parking. Aroma has the best selection of white (try the Silver Needle!), oolong, and green teas, and you can never go wrong with the iced variety. Favorite dishes include the Grilled New York Steak Salad, Classic Aroma Burger, and the Turkey Hummus Melt.

Layers, layers, layers! It’s all about layering in Los Angeles because the sun’ll come out in the morning, brunch-time calls for slight showers, evening welcomes afternoon heat, and night calls forth a frigid breeze. Who says L.A. doesn’t have seasons, when we experience four seasons in 24 hours!

Do not, and I repeat, do not leave your winter coat at home. Travelers are always surprised by how far the temperature drops when the sun goes down, so remember to pack a sweater, some long sleeve tops, boots, and warm socks.

Restaurants, clubs, and bars often provide heaters on the patios, so you can enjoy your meal or drinks outside. Winter wardrobe necessities include: small umbrella, galoshes, and rain slicker. Preferably in bright, stylish colors! Yes, we are the land where our mini skirts or shorts are paired with Ugg boots, topped with a tank top and knitted scarf.

What about beach attire, you say? Most definitely pack your bikini and SPF 30 sunscreen, because the sun is almost always shining, but be prepared for the chilly waters of the Pacific if you’re brave enough to dive in for a second or two. Sunglasses are a must, and accessorizing your outfit with a hat is so very L.A. Welcome to Hollywood!

Drago Centro (525 S. FLower St.)

Located in downtown Los Angeles, Chef Celestino Drago rediscovers local Italian dishes with contemporary cooking techniques.
Campanile (624 S. La Brea Ave.)

Housed in a historic structure by architect Roy Sheldon Price for Hollywood Legend Charlie Chaplin, Campanile opened after a complete remodel in 1989. Savor rustic Italian-influenced dishes like Black Truffle Carbonara or Heirloom Tomato Salad in a gorgeous setting reminiscent of an Italian courtyard complete with bell tower, bakery and open kitchen.

Angelini Osteria (7313 Beverly Blvd.)

Viva l’Osteria! Angelini Osteria recreates the fabled Osterias of pre-war Italy, relaxed meeting places to socialize over luscious meals and carafes of wine. The delectable green lasagna transports you from LA to the rural countryside of Italy. Make your reservations in advance to grab a table at this cozy restaurant where Master Chef Gino Angelini concocts masterpieces of Italian cuisine.

Osteria Mozza (6602 Melrose Ave.)

Hopping with celebs, Mozza takes reservations months in advance for tables. Don’t let the glitz and glamour of the clientele get in the way of ordering some of the best pasta served outside of the motherland. You can’t go wrong with the perfectly prepared pasta tasting menu for $69 per person accompanied by the optional $50 wine paring.

Manja, manja!

The Apple Pan (10801 W. Pico Blvd.)
Organic? Check. Fresh horchatas? Check. Vegan ice cream? Check, check, check. Mexican eats doesn’t get any better than this. Order the meal deal to add chips, salsa and a refreshing drink to any burrito, tacos or bowl.

Pink’s Hot Dogs (709 N. La Brea Ave.)
No visit to LA is complete without making a stop at this Hollywood institution, a family-owned hot dog stand since 1939. Don’t let the line that circles around the block deter you from experiencing the best, juiciest hot dogs in SoCal.

Mulberry Street Pizzeria (Beverly Hills, Encino, Sherman Oaks)
Hands down the best pizza in LA, straight from the streets of New York City. Celebrating its 20th anniversary in the City of Angels, this place is a must for any self-proclaimed pie connoisseur. Order the lunch special that comes with 2 hefty pizza slices, small salad and drink, a tasty steal for just $8.

Trotting on a beautiful horse, up and down deserted wildlife-filled hills on a crisp autumn evening as a colorful pink and orange sun retreats into the horizon. Sounds like somewhere in the middle of Utah or Colorado, doesn’t it? Gallop no further than LA’s own Sunset Ranch Hollywood, established in 1929, where this unique outdoor activity awakens the inner equestrian in all of us.

Atop Beachwood Canyon, nestled in the Hollywood Hills, sits a ranch straight out of a classic John Wayne film, complete with roosters given free reign over the grounds. Our trusty guide, Robbie Davis, greeted me and my riding buddies while we got acquainted with our horses and strapped on our helmets. Having only ridden horses only once in my life before, bareback at the base of the Himalayan Mountains on a pony as a 10-year-old, I fit into the beginner category and was assigned to a gentle mustang, Trigger.

After some basic lessons in horse handling, we were off! Riding past the Hollywood sign, taking in the breathtaking views of Downtown LA as the mist rolled in over the mountains from the Pacific Ocean, you forget you’re in the middle of a major metropolitan city. Catching glimpses of coyotes, rabbits and owls along the way as we descended the mountain into Griffith Park and Burbank added to the wilderness adventure. We passed through the gorgeous dusty expanse of Oak Canyon, spotted the Griffith Observatory, and sauntered by the famous Bronson Canyon caves, aka the original Batcave in the Batman television series. As the sun started to disappear and the air got cooler (bring your parka!), we arrived at the Viva Cantina Mexican Restaurant for dinner. After the 2 ½ hour ride, the posse couldn’t wait to get some South of the Border grub and bevvies into our famished bellies.

Photo By Sujata Day featuring Guide Robbie Davis

Satisfyingly satiated, we jumped back on our horses for the night trek back, traveling under the stars and the crescent moon. Taking on a Sleepy Hollow feel, with no lamps or streetlights guiding the way, we traversed the same path under three tunnels until we ascended back up through the hills. My horse Trigger had a horse ladyfriend waiting for him back at the ranch and trotted happily along first in line, in eager anticipation of their reunion. Robbie began to tell ghost tales of Colonel Griffith and Rancho Los Feliz, sending delightful shivers down my spine as horned owls hooted in the background providing the perfect soundtrack to some spooky stories. Unfortunately, or luckily, no apparitions appeared out of the darkness so we made it back to the ranch safe and sound.

Make reservations for Sunset Ranch Hollywood’s Dinner Rides, similar to my memorable evening, or choose from a variety of others like the Mount Hollywood, Lunch, or shorter 1 and 2-hour rides. Take advantage of Friday night retro prices for the Sunset Dinner Ride or special daily deals on the 1-hour rides all week long. Pull on your cowboy boots and experience an unforgettable journey through the Hollywood Hills. Giddyap amigos!
