A Spot of Color

Events, Things to Do — By Jacy Meyer on March 18, 2011 at 4:51 am

It may be too early to start recommending parks, but there’s a special (indoor) exhibition at the Prague Botanical Gardens that garden lovers shouldn’t miss. From March 18-27, a special exhibition and sale of orchids will be on at the Garden’s Fata Morgana Greenhouse.

The Botanical Gardens offer an outdoor strolling area, an indoor greenhouse and a still-producing vineyard. The Japanese garden is not to be missed, nor are the views from the vineyard. There’s a winery onsite as well where you can sample the vintages produced from the locally grown grapes. In the summer, there are more than 300 species of perennial and annual plants in bloom.  While we recommend more the Garden’s outdoor space, the orchid exhibition is truly a site to behold. The beautiful and exotic blooms truly brighten up a grey March day with their plethora of colors and unique shapes. Learn about varieties from around the world, which orchids have medicinal properties and which ones can be used as an aphrodisiac. On permanent display in the greenhouse is vegetation from Australia, Madagascar, Mexico and some regions of Africa as well as the rainforest regions of Central and South America.

Typically in the summertime, the Botanical Gardens offer a summer music series in the outdoor park.
