With just a few weeks to go until the start of the biggest party in the world (that’s Rio Carnival, of course…) it’s time to think about what you’re going to wear for those four days of rampant partying

While there are no hard and fast rules about what you should wear for Carnival, it always pays to put in a bit of effort. Some blocos (street parties) have their own themes or color codes, and the more imaginative your take on the theme, the better. Let’s face it, there’s no better excuse than Rio Carnival to let your imagination run riot, and you should feel free to be as outrageous as you like – in fact, the more out there, the better.

When it comes to stocking up on accessories and outfits for Carnival, the best place to head for is the bargain hunter’s paradise of Saara, in the heart of downtown Rio.

This maze of shopping streets is packed with stores selling colorful bits and pieces, ranging from full samba costumes¬† (be warned, even in Saara these will blow the budget) to plastic ‘grass’ skirts, fairy wings, animal costumes, masks, magic wands, feather boas…in short, absolutely everything you need to create your colorful Carnival wardrobe.

And for those who prefer to fade into the background, you should still make a token effort – you’ll stand out far more if you aren’t wearing anything glitzy and gaudy than you will in the loudest of outfits.
