Friday Photo: Dim Sum

Food, Photo Friday — By mariannerogerson on July 16, 2010 at 6:56 am

As the Singapore Food Festival kicks off today, celebrating the Chinese influence on Singaporean cuisine, I thought it would be apt to have today’s Friday Photo of a selection of Dim Sum – everybody’s favourite Chinese treat.

As you would expect, there are a LOT of good places to enjoy dim sum in Singapore – I’m going to leave that round-up to another blog post (coming soon I promise). In the meantime, here’s a selection of the most popular dumplings, buns and pastries to look out for next time you’re in for a dim sum feast:

Har Gao – steamed shrimp dumplings
Char Siew Bao – steamed barbecue pork buns
Char Siew Sou – baked barbecue pork pastries
Cheong Fun – steamed rice flour rolls, commonly filled with pork or seafood
Xiao Long Bao – steamed pork dumplings filled with soup
Siew Mai – Steamed dumplings, made with pork and shrimp and topped with fish roe
Dan Tart or Egg Tarts – baked pastries filled with egg custard

And of course don’t forget the Phoenix Talons (that’s chicken feet to you and I)… if you’re game…
