Taroko means “beautiful” or “magnificent” in Chinese, and Taroko National Park is both. The park, located south of Taipei, is best known for it’s Marble Gorge, a large gorge carved by the Liwu river over millions of years. If you’re looking for a nice fall getaway from the city, catch the two hour train ride from Taipei for a weekend of scenic hikes and fresh air. See if you can spot some of the 144 species of birds, 251 species of butterflies, 32 species of reptiles, or 30 large mammal species found in the park.
