Earth Hour in Vancouver

Events, Food, Things to Do, What's New — By Natasha John on March 26, 2010 at 9:33 pm

We all do it at some point in the day. However, it’s usually when we’re just about to close our eyes for the day and start drifting into a soft sleep where our dreams light the night. What’s that thing we do?  We turn off the lights.

Something a little different is going to happen this Saturday, March 27, 2010; many people will be intentionally turning off their lights in solidarity for a cause. It’s the annual, worldwide Earth Hour and between the hours of 8:30pm and 9:30pm, businesses and individuals are encouraged to turn off electricity to show their support for our environment.

It reminds me of being a young child and eagerly waiting for a summer storm to roll in, knocking the power out and leaving us in the dark. The evening would be spent surrounded by the glow of dim candles or playing a game of hide and go seek in the dark.

I somehow don’t think that the latter will be happening in my home this year, but I will certainly be turning the lights off and enjoying a little candlelight dinner with friends.

How will the rest of Vancouver be spending it?

Well, if you are in the mood to dine out, many local restaurants are participating in Earth Hour and are offering up sumptuous meals served by candlelight. Tres romantique, non?

All four Fairmont Hotel properties in Vancouver (Fairmont Vancouver Hotel, Fairmont Pacific Rim, Fairmont Waterfront and the Fairmont Vancouver Airport ) will have their restaurants/lounges set up to participate in Earth Hour.

Elixir at the Opus Hotel will be setting the mood and offering a locally inspired, three-course menu (a bargain at $35!)to nosh on over candlelight in their lovely cozy bistro.

Even corporate chains are chiming in across Canada and showing their support for the environment. McDonald’s will be turning off those famous Golden Arches outside each property across Canada, in an effort to conserve energy.

After hosting the most green Olympics to date, it’s no surprise that Canada has the most cities signed up (260 to be exact) to participate in Earth Hour.

Other notable places in Vancouver that will be participating are:

La Terrazza Restaurant

Altitudes Bistro & The Observatory at Grouse Mountain

Yew at the Four Seasons

The Reef

Starbucks at 1752 Commercial Dr, Vancouver

Seems like there is some great stuff going in in Vancouver for Earth Hour — a great follow-on to the most green Olympics. Thanks for this info!
