Oregon to BC; only a train ride away
Kid Friendly, Things to Do, Travel Tips, What's New — By Natasha John on May 31, 2010 at 6:00 amA road trip can sometimes seem like a daunting task with images of long boarder waits, traffic jams and bathroom breaks, dancing in your head, and sometimes all the beef jerky and gas station coffee just isn’t enough to save you from the helms of road-trip pitfalls.
Often, us BC folk like to hop in our cars and drive down the West coast and take a trip down to Oregon to enjoy some sun and surf; wind in your hair and music on full blast are preferable on route. Another popular reason to venture down to the Land of the Free is to partake in some retail therapy in Washington.
That’s what we like about America, but for you Yanks, a trip up to the Great White North (though rather green at the moment) can offer you wineries, hiking, skiing, beaching, fishing, camping, shopping, whale watching and some of the most memorable meals you will have in a long time; BC is the place to be.
If you find driving your car a little too intimidating, or you would rather be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the view, leave those keys at home and take the Amtrak. Start down in Eugene, OR and make your way up to Vancouver and get intimate with the coastal view. It’s the West coast’s version of the Orient Express…kinda…sorta…The seats are comfortable, there are power outlets for your laptop and the price is right. So, the next time you’re thinking of coming up for some Canadian bacon or a little ‘eh’ in your day, step onto the Amtrak and leave the car at home.
