Vancouver’s tasty treats

Usually when I am out and about running errands, a coffee and fruit will suffice until I’m able to get some real sustenance. However, when you’re in Vancouver, you should take advantage of the treats we have in our grocery stores.

Downtown Vancouver has a high residential population, which means that we have many markets, grocery stores (Whole Foods, Choices, Urban Fair, Marketplace IGA and Nesters Market are the main larger stores) and specialty shops that you can find something to satisfy your hunger.

Don't be afraid of these little gems!

When my sisters are visiting from England, they have to pick up ketchup chips and dill pickle chips. It sounds like an acquired taste, but after you try one, you will understand why us Canadians love them! You can even get those flavors in mini rice cakes too, for those that are a little more health conscious. The flavor of a ketchup chip is hard to describe, but it’s somewhat sweet and salty at the same time. Dill pickle tastes much like dill pickles. In the South, they have deep fried pickles – we have deep fried potatoes that taste like pickles.

Another popular Vancouver snack is anything to do with salmon: salmon jerky, candied salmon, lox and smoked salmon pate. Most grocery stores carry all of these products, so make sure you try at least one of them. The candied smoked salmon nuggets are great to eat on their own! It’s smoked with maple syrup and the end result is a tasty little nugget of hot smoked salmon that has a firm texture and there is a certain sweetness to the meat.

Eat your Omega 3s!!

If you have a hankering for something sweet, try a Nanaimo Bar. The crust is chocolatey, soft and scattered with coconut, while the middle is a vanilla, butter cream filling and it’s all topped off with chocolate. Rich? Yes!

Another popular item you will see in our grocery stores right now is local berries! Strawberry season is coming to a close, but raspberries, cherries and blueberries are in full force! I picked up a punnet of raspberries the other day, got the grocery store to rinse them for me, sat on the Seawall and munched away. It was the perfect summer treat!

Local fruit is where it's at!
