Food in New Zealand used to be cheap. No, really, it did! Who knows what happened, but nowadays you just need to know where to go. For the most part that means avoiding your average sit down restaurant and opting for more casual surroundings. If you are just looking for a five dollar meal for lunch, you can do none better than to grab a pie and a drink. The only thing more 'New Zealand' than that is to go for fish and chips and we claim to have better quality offerings than they do in England. You decide, but make sure you choose a good place and, preferable, eat on the beach. If you do want to sit down, there are two main options which give you high quality fare, usually under $20 (and often under $10!). Firstly, check out our amazing cafes. Breakfast and brunch out are very popular Auckland activities and you can tell how good a cafe is by how many people are inside. If you have to squish in the last remaining table, you've found a good'un. Many cafes also serve lunch and some even evening meals with wine and beer. So, if you spot a place in the daytime, just check their hours if you plan to come back at night. Your second choice (my favourite) is the Asian food courts. Now, I know what you are thinking! But these are moer like the hawker centres in Singapore than the corn dog-based mall offerings in the U.S. and the food is go-ood! Don't forget that New Zealand is closer to Asia than Europe and we love noodles and rice as much as we love lamb and potatoes. Try it and see!
