While it's not important in a city the size of Auckland to be located near the bridge, it is advantageous to use the bridge as a marker for all things water-based. By choosing a hotel listed as "near the Harbour Bridge" you will be ensuring that you either have a great view of the Harbour or, in the very least, the shortest journey to drink at the Viaduct Basin or hop on a dinner cruise. There is a cluster of high-end hotels near the waterfront including the stunning Hilton Hotel. Its simple white lines are reminescent of a ship as it sits out over the water on Prince's Wharf. For a more personal venue, you may want to choose Mollies B & B in St. Mary's Bay. Even if you don't stay here you can always come up for a good dinner and a view. There are also business-type hotels as well as the usual mid-range offerings. And, although they are not right on the water, there are a couple of backpackers (the local word for hostels) within a two minute walk of the waterfront. So, just about anyone can stay in a place where you can smell the salty air in Auckland.
