Basing yourself in the CBD is quite a good thing to do in Auckland and there are two reasons for this. One is that many of the city's attractions are so central that you could walk to them and still pop back to the hotel for a rest if you wanted to. Two, for the things that are located outside of the CBD you either need to hire a car or take public transport. Being that New Zealand is quite a car-based society, public transport is not really our best feature. However, having said that, being based in the CBD means you are at the end of the line for what buses and trains we do have thus you will not find yourself in a 'change and change again' type bus scenario. Auckland takes very good care of its visitors to the point that we have many accommodation options, but the majority of people will be looking for a nice CBD hotel and this list should help you get started. Most hotels have online booking systems now and also good websites where you can have a look at the room and facilities. If you already know what kid of things you want to do, use the map function to see which hotels are closest to your chosen activities. Bear in mind that nothing is very far to walk to, but if you are at the waterfront, you will be at the bottom of the hill with Karangahape Road being at the top. It's up to you whether you want that hard slog up hill to be in the morning or on your way back at night!
