Bangkok offers loads of interesting sites to visit and visitors are especially keen on staying in familiar areas such as Rattanakosin (the area around the Grand Palace) or anywhere within walking distance of the BTS Skytrain or MRT Subway system. But don't be afraid to head out and explore many of the amazing attractions you can find just outside the city. We're not talking islands in the south, but easy day trips or half day trips or even just an overnight stay. Here we have a list of the top ten greatest things to do outside of Bangkok. Without a doubt the UNESCO World Heritage sites should jump to the top of your list. Whether it's the former capital of the Kingdom, Ayutthaya, or the rich ecosystem in and around Khao Yai, a mountain national park just under two hours drive. If you are not into renting a car, don't worry: Thailand's transit system can get you anywhere if you have the patience. On your way to Ayutthaya, stop by Bang Pa-in Summer Palace. If Khao Yai is too far, just take the short ride to Samut Prakarn and Bang Pu Nature Park. Floating markets are always good for some sweet photography. Visit animals at either an elephant camp or crocodile farm. See copies of the entire Kingdom's attractions all in one theme park at Ancient City. History buffs won't want to miss the Bridge on the River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, part of the so-called Thai-Burma Death Railway.
