It has been said that just a couple of decades ago Bangkok was a village of 5 million. The tallest buildings were just a few stories. Now the Bangkok skyline is high-rises and skyscrapers. One doesn't often then think of Bangkok as having too many historic buildings. This, of course, couldn't be further from the truth. Here NileGuide presents a list of the most important historical buildings in Bangkok. There is much more to see than the dazzling Grand Palace. The various Kings and their families kept a number of different palaces that are similarly beguiling, such as Bang Pa-in Palace just outside of Bangkok or Suan Pakkad right downtown. Older structures, such as the temples and buildings at Ayutthaya, have gotten the nod from UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. There is the occasional fort, such as Phra Sumen, easily accessible along Phra Athit Road, but also more traditionally Thai structures, such as the Jim Thompson House or the Thai home over at Siam Society. So these are not just the best Bangkok palaces, but also a little bit more.
