  • If you came to China to experience life the way the locals do, then put your wallet away and take a tour of Shanghai's cheaper restaurants. You will have a great time with local folks and the cuisine is literally much better and more 'Chinese' than the more expensive alternatives. If you want to eat on a dime, this may just be the best city on the planet for you!

    Consider this-- Dongbei Ren has some of the best north-Chinese food in the city. You'll find excellent noodles, bread and spicy and hearty potato and meat dishes, all of which Dongbei Ren is famous for, as well as the charming atmosphere and friendly staff.

    Di Shui Dong is a local favorite for Hunan cuisine, the spiciest of China's food options. There will likely be a line as the food is much sought after and extremely delicious.

    Tan's Fish Restaurant is a great place to go in Shanghai on the cheap to try some of the coastal favorites pulled directly from the ocean and rivers nearby.

    For a bit of a western food break amid your Chinese cuisine adventures, check out the tasty treats as Pasta Fresca Da Salvatore, which offer a welcomed break as well as a delightful excursion of its own.
