Maui's upcountry region (located higher in elevation up Haleakala volcano) is made up of mostly farm towns with small town centers. The town of Makawao is arguably upcountry's most visited town because of the unique shops, art galleries, and restaurants that make up its downtown area.
The shops in Makawao exhibit locally made clothing and jewelry that is inspired by themes close to the hearts of residents living upcountry, such as nature, cowboys, simplicity, and family. Pick up one-of-kind artwork that you won't find anywhere else on the island.
Dining options in Makawao are almost as abundant as the art galleries. Casanovas (fine Italian food), the Stop Watch (sports bar), and the Makawao Steak House offer great options for dinner. The Stop Watch is where you will find many locals winding down after a hard days work. Ask about happy hour deals and about upcoming live performances.
Of course, if visiting Makawao, you should also drive ten more minutes higher in elevation to the town of Kula, where you can visit the Kula Botanical Gardens, the beautiful and small Holy Ghost Church, the Kula Lavender Farm, and Rice Park.
