"Upcountry Maui" is the title given to the towns located higher in elevation up Haleakala volcano. Some of the more popular towns include Makawao, Pukalani, and Kula. Farming and agriculture are huge in Upcountry Maui, with houses spread out over larger plots of land.
Of course the top thing to do when driving upcountry is to drive all the way to the top of Haleakala volcano. You can take hikes down to the crater, explore the educational facility, or book a bicycle or horseback tour.
If visiting Kula, we recommend making a stop at the historic Holy Ghost Church. The small Portuguese octagon church was actually brought over from the shores of Portugal centuries ago. The nearby Rice Park offers incredible views of the Maui valley down below.
Lastly, be sure to visit Tedeschi Winery, Maui's sole winery. Take a tour of the grounds (which used to be a vacation home for the Hawaiian kings), and enjoy free samples of the locally made wine. The nearby Ulupalakua Ranch Store will give you a good glimpse of Maui's cowboy scene.
