Most people opting to visit Haleakala National Park time their trip to the summit with the sunrise or sunset, as the views are spectacular. As you begin to plan your trip up the volcano, there are plenty of other activities you should include while you are traveling to Maui's upcountry region.
The nation's first zipline tour was actually started on Maui. Book an eco-adventure and learn about Maui's flora and fauna as you zoom overhead on a series of zipline routes. If flying isn't your thing, a 4x4 ATV tour is also offered right next door to the zipline tour.
Maui's only winery is also located high in elevation in the town of Ulupalakua. Take a free guided tour of the grounds and operations, followed up with up to five free wine samplings. The historic land was once the vacation spot for ancient Hawaiian monarchs. Across the street from the winery you will notice a ranch store. Head on over for some elk burgers or unusual cowboy-themed souvenirs.
Upcountry Maui has a collection of small towns worth driving through such as Makawao, Kula, and Pukalani. When in Kula, check out the small and beautiful octagon-shaped Holy Ghost Church, which was shipped over from Portugal over a century ago.
