History Attractions in Maui

Maui is rich with history. The capital of the Hawaiian Islands used to be located in Lahaina, before it was relocated to Honolulu. Lahaina was a popular whaling town centuries ago, and still maintains a small town charm. Be sure to stay at the historic harbor-front Pioneer Inn.

A trip to Iao Valley is also a must-do for history buffs. Learn about the battlegrounds of one of Hawaii's bloodiest wars, where the islands were finally united under one monarchy. Iao Needle also possesses some incredible views.

There are a few shows you can attend that will detail Hawaiian chants, songs, dance, and mythology. Ulalena is an award-winning show that is staged in Lahaina and features an authentic Polynesian percussion band. Various hula performances will also give you insight into what Hawaii was like centuries ago.

If you are heading upcountry, stop off at Tedeschi Vineyards for a history lesson on Maui's oldest winery. The guest shop actually used to be a vacation retreat for past Hawaiian monarchs. Enjoy the free museum as you sample the local wines.
