The north shore of Maui is where the wave riders play. Every winter large waves hit the north facing beaches and bring world class surfers from across the world to Maui. Locals like to catch waves at Ho'okipa, Baldwin Beach, Paia Bay, and head to Kanaha for windsurfing/kite boarding.
Because of the influx of surfers to the north shore, the originally small surf town of Paia has grown in popularity among tourists looking to explore the more "hippy side" of Maui. Shop through amazing surf stores or unique stores like Hemp House (merchandise is made from hemp) or Moonbow Tropics. Ladies will want to shop for a bikini at Maui Girl, which sells beachwear consistently featured by swimsuit models in Sports Illustrated.
Lastly, the bike riding tours that escort you down Haleakala volcano end their journey in the town of Paia. Although the company can pick you up at your hotel, you may want to plan a trip out to Paia to see the town and book a downhill bike adventure you won't soon forget.
